NEW ENGLAND STUDENTS SHINE AT NSW TRAINING AWARDS

The region’s most outstanding apprentices, trainees, students and teachers were recognised today at the New England 2022 NSW Training Awards.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said Tamworth local Kelly O’Gorman took out the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the regional ceremony held in Tamworth.

“Kelly is a motivated young woman who undertook her school-based traineeship through Tamworth Hospital. She is seen as mentor to those around her and takes immense pride in her training” Mr Anderson said.

“Kelly’s VET course exposed her to different workplace settings that she had never experienced before, which has helped her grow both personally and professionally. I congratulate Kelly on this well-deserved honour.”

The NSW Training Awards are held annually to recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector.

Two Kootingal locals, Shaun Tobin and Sophie Hobden, were also recognised at the regional ceremony.

Shaun took home the Trainee Student of the Year for his commitment and passion towards his role as an apprentice, and now as an operator with Tamworth Regional Council. Since joining a year ago, Shaun has quickly risen to be one of the key and senior members of their fast-paced CBD crew.

For her leadership qualities and clear decision-making processes, Sophie was awarded the VET in Schools Student of the Year. Sophie has always been interested in healthcare and her VET training provided greater insight into the fields theoretical and practical aspects.

Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens said the enormous breadth of talent amongst this year’s finalists and winners demonstrates the opportunities available for rewarding careers available through vocational education and training.

“Vocational education and training delivers real life skills for people to help them get the jobs they want and it’s great to see so many passionate and enthusiastic young people receiving awards locally,” Mr Henskens said.

“The NSW Government is delivering a range of fee-free and low-fee training to help people get a first job, a new job or a better job, and these awards are a great way to highlight the career opportunities that are available right here in NSW.”
