DOUBLE DEMERITS IN EFFECT FROM TODAY

Motorists across the electorate are being reminded that double demerits are in force this Australia Day long weekend.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said double demerits are a strong reminder of the importance of following the road rules

“We are expecting an influx of visitors to our region over this Australia Day long weekend as people flock to enjoy the Tamworth Country Music Festival,” Mr Anderson said.

“I also know a lot of locals will be leaving the region for a well-earned break, or enjoying some time by the water at one of our dams and rivers.

“While we’re all ready for a great long weekend, it’s important to remember that double demerits came into effect today and end at 11.59pm on Sunday 28 January.

“Police are also in force across our region with additional police visiting from across the state to assist with the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

“We know that holiday periods can bring with them an increase in accidents and loss of life on our roads.

“Speeding, fatigue, dangerous driving, drink and drug driving, and distracted driving are among the leading cause of accidents in Australia.

“The recent Christmas and New Year holiday period is a stark reminder of the dangers of travelling on our roads, and we do not want to see a repeat of the tragic events experienced in that period.

“This Australia Day weekend, please take your time, drive carefully, and rest, revive, survive.”
