MAJOR REFURBISHMENT OF GUNNEDAH POLICE STATION
NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant, Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson announced today that if re-elected the Baird Government will refurbish Gunnedah Police Station.
“If re-elected the Baird-Grant Government will start work on a major refurbishment of Gunnedah Police Station including the replacement of two houses on site,” Mr Grant said.
“For too long, police and the communities they serve in the bush have had to put up with substandard police infrastructure.
“The Liberals & Nationals Government is committed to providing police with the facilities they need to get on and do what they do best – protecting our communities.”
Built in the early 1960s, Gunnedah Police Station houses a public reception, general duties area, detectives and highway patrol offices as well as a single holding cell, charge room and three docks.
“The building is 50 years old and is in generally poor condition,” Mr Ayres said.
“The refurbishment will modernise the tired old station to improve service delivery to the local community and to meet operational needs now and into the future.
“This Government inherited a police properties portfolio starved of maintenance funding, all so successive Labor Ministers could announce high profile stations in marginal Sydney seats.
“I applaud the tireless effort of Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson who has pushed hard to secure this funding for Gunnedah Police Station,” Mr Ayres added.
Mr Anderson said today’s announcement is a major win for local police.
“The community have been calling for this for some time and we need to be able to provide police with the resources they need to get on top of crime. Ultimately if we can build a better facility, it will help us to attract more police into the future.
“Police continue to do an outstanding job in the local community in the fight against drugs, car theft and general rural crime.
“I thank the community for their ongoing support which secured this announcement today,” Mr Anderson concluded.
