If Kevin Anderson MP has his way, dads across NSW will be extra buoyant this Father’s Day.

A campaign to encourage people to wear lifejackets is targeting primary school age children and encouraging them to ‘Wrap dad in a lifejacket’.

The Member for Tamworth and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads, Maritime and Freight said a lifejacket was a great alternative present to socks and jocks.

“If you’re looking for something a bit different to socks and jocks, a lifejacket is a great - and very safe - alternative,” Mr Anderson said.

“Lifejacket wear is required by legislation in most circumstances when out boating and fines of $250 apply if you are caught not wearing one - more than the cost of most lifejackets.

“This Father’s Day, we’re enlisting the help of mothers and students to remind Dad how important a lifejacket is when boating and to help us deliver this important safety message.

“We need to keep dads as safe as possible given eight out of ten people who drown while boating in NSW are not wearing a lifejacket and the overwhelming majority are male.”

Roads and Maritime is providing a selection of public and private primary schools across NSW with gift packs promoting lifejacket wear on a travel coffee cup, perfect for Father’s Day. The packs will also include a colouring-in Father’s Day card and a small pack of pencils.

“This campaign supports the great work our Boating Education Officers do with some of these schools and others across the state to reinforce the safe boating on our waterways,” Mr Anderson said.
