Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today welcomed the historical agreement between the NSW Government and the Grain Research Development Corporation (GRDC) which will focus on winter crop pathology and winter crop agronomy and physiology in NSW; covering cereals, pulses and oilseeds.


Mr Anderson said the agreement will benefit the local regions grain growers by boosting their productivity and meeting future demand opportunities as well as provide a welcome funding injection into the Tamworth Ag Institute.


“The $65 million commitment, over the first five years of a planned 10 year investment of up to $130 million, will bring together the research capabilities within NSW and the lead industry research organisation – GRDC.


“This is announcement further demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to our region and to the Tamworth Ag Institute.


“Agriculture plays a big role in our local economy which is why we must continue to invest in the sector’s future.


“This funding will enable the NSW Government to forward plan for resources and infrastructure requirements to ensure world class research and development for local grain growers.


“The agreement will increase industry productivity and capacity to respond to risks and adapt to change by providing valuable information for growers, including those in the local region, to make changes and implement new research outcomes to benefit their farming system.


“It also aims to supports grain grower to increase their business profitability through improved efficiencies and reduced inputs.”

The NSW grains industry generates $3.6 billion each year to the NSW economy.


The investment aligns with the Commonwealth and NSW Government commitments under the National Research, Development and Extension Strategy for the grains industry.
