ANDERSON - TAMWORTH HEADING FOR CENTRE OF MEDICAL EXCELLENCE
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today attended the official opening of the Tamworth Education Centre which will provide undergraduate, postgraduate and professional training programs for students pursuing a career and research in the field of health care.
Mr Anderson said that the Tamworth Education Centre is part of the University of Newcastle’s Health and Medicine faculty for students involved with the bachelor of medicine’s joint medical program and allied health.
“The University currently accommodates more than 100 students in Tamworth, who are on rural clinical placements in the hospital or with health care providers in the city.
“The Tamworth Education Centre is a state of the art facility that provides tutorial rooms, clinical skills labs, a lecture theatre and on site accommodation for more than 50 students.
“This facility will support the training of medical, nursing and allied health students and the facility gives students the chance to work with local health experts in simulated real life situations.
"Rural clinical schools enable medical students to undertake extended blocks of their clinical training in regional areas. The benefit of providing students with a rural experience is that they get a feel for life in the country, with many choosing to stay.
“We need to continue to attract doctors to our area and this facility along with its dedicated professional staff will go a long way to lifting doctor numbers in the country.
“The recent investment in rural health and medicine in our region has been significant to the State and Federal Governments funding commitments.
“It started with the $42 million Tamworth Northwest Cancer Centre, the $220 million redevelopment of the Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital, and now with the $19 Million Tamworth Education Centre.
“I believe we can be a centre of medical excellence.
“I thank the University of Newcastle for their continued faith and investment into health in rural New South Wales through their latest facility the Tamworth Education Centre which will provide students with the opportunity to learn in a fantastic setting,” Mr Anderson concluded.
