ANDERSON WELCOMES FUNDING FOR DUNGOWAN DAM UPGRADE STUDY
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has welcomed the Commonwealth Government announcement today to provide funding for a feasibility study to improve water supply and flood security for Dungowan Dam.
“Today’s announcement of $850,000 is a great step towards improving water security in the Peel Valley.
“For many years people have talked to me about upgrading Dungowan Dam, so I welcome the announcement today that money will be allocated to seeing if this is possible.
“It makes good sense to look at every opportunity to increase the capacity a Dungowan Dam and continue to increase water security for our region.
“Dungowan Dam is critical to Tamworth’s future growth, typically supplying around 40 per cent of Tamworth’s water supply needs.
“A strategic business case to progress works to address future demand, water security and dam safety risks in the Peel Valley will also be undertaken as part of the study.”
Minister for Lands and Water Niall Blair said once the study is completed, key options will be shortlisted and provided to the NSW Government based on feasibility, cost benefit, stakeholder and environmental requirements – with a view to progressing the study’s findings.
“The NSW Government remains committed to finding long-term solutions to regional water security to underpin the social, economic and environmental prosperity of our rural communities.
“Partnerships between the NSW and Commonwealth Governments through initiatives such as the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund are crucial to ensuring our state continues to grow by supporting our rural and regional communities,” Minister Blair concluded.
