Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has welcomed Virgin Australia’s addition of six extra flights to the Tamworth to Sydney route following months of campaigning.

Mr Anderson said the new services which go on sale from today will add more competition to the Tamworth to Sydney market, making air travel a more viable option for more people in the region.

“When Virgin first launched in Tamworth last May with one flight a day they gave a commitment to look at increasing their services. Following many meetings I’m delighted to see our hard has work come to fruition with more competition on the Tamworth to Sydney route which should ultimately result in cheaper flights.

“One of the challenges that had to be overcome was the availability of peak time slots in and out of Sydney which I discussed with the then Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss who supported opening those peak times slots for Tamworth.

“I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to finally get to a position where Virgin can introduce the schedule that will now add real competition to the Tamworth-Sydney route.

“The new schedule allows travellers more choice in the time they fly and the airline they fly with. With a more competitive market we are bound to see competitive airfares which is great news for the people of Tamworth and the surrounding region.

“We are a growing regional city and this provides further opportunity for economic growth and regional development so affordable travel is essential to growing regional NSW.

“Travel options to and from Tamworth are important and we will keep working to increase options that are available across air, road and rail so that people have a greater choice in the way they travel.

“I congratulate Virgin and thank CEO John Borghetti for his persistence, faith and investment in Tamworth and our regional communities,” Mr Anderson concluded.
