Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has invited TAFE General Manager Jon Black to visit Gunnedah ahead of plans to redevelop the campus.

Mr Anderson said $800,000 has been allocated for the redevelopment of the Gunnedah campus and he wants to make sure that they get it right.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to shape the campus to meet our needs so I believe it’s really important that the boss of TAFE comes to Gunnedah to meet with staff and businesses to discuss what’s required.

“Because we have a problem with unemployment and skills in Gunnedah, we need to provide the training courses and opportunities to locals so they can do those jobs.

“We need to think about engineering, electro technology, automotive, engineering, construction, plumbing, electrical, welding and any other agricultural or mine related activity.

“If we want our local businesses to employ locals then we have to support them with training options and I believe TAFE plays a very important role in that process.

Gunnedah Mayor Jamie Chaffey said “TAFE needs to talk to local businesses to find out about what training options we need for our employees, to upskill them or take on an apprentice.

“The discussion also needs to be had about how we want that training delivered and when we want it delivered. It can either be at the workplace or on site at TAFE.”

Mr Anderson said “I know that with a redeveloped TAFE they would be able offer that flexibility and that’s why I have asked the General Manager to come to Gunnedah to look at how we can make it work for Gunnedah.”
