2020 NAIDOC GRANTS SUPPORT CELEBRATIONS FOR HISTORY, CULTURE AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said NAIDOC community grants opened this week to support events that celebrate Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.
Mr Anderson said up to $3000 is available to support groups in the region to fund events that focus on the importance of Aboriginal culture and its place in our community.
“This is great news for our local community groups, NAIDOC Week is an important time to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions Indigenous communities and their cultures.
“In recent times, organisations like Gunnedah’s Winanga-Li Aboriginal Child and Family Centre and Tamworth Regional Council have received grants under this program to honour women’s achievements and for celebrations of Aboriginal culture.
“I encourage local organisations right across our region to apply for grant funding to host events during this NAIDOC Week that celebrate the important place Aboriginal people play in our communities.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to practice one of the world’s oldest living cultures here in Australia and that makes us unique in the eyes of the world,” Mr Anderson concluded.
The 2020 National NAIDOC Week will run from 5 to 12 July, focusing on the theme Always Was, Always Will Be, reflecting the importance of the land and culture that has forever been part of Australia’s Indigenous culture.
Eligible not-for-profit organisations in NSW can apply for grants of $500 to $1,000 to recognise their local Aboriginal community achievements, cultures, languages and identity. For more significant standalone events, which may involve a number of partners, grants of up to $3,000 are available.
Grant applications close Friday 24 April 2020.
