Safety and travel times on the Oxley Highway have been improved with the completion of a number of projects in the Tamworth electorate.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the NSW Government funded the work as part of its $60 million commitment to improve the highway for locals, tourists and freight operators.

“The Oxley Highway is the lifeblood of this community, connecting Port Macquarie to Tamworth, Gunnedah, Coonabarabran, Gilgandra and Warren.

“The new 1.3 kilometre overtaking lane 24 kilometres east of Gunnedah will make it easier for trucks and cars to share the road and reduce the number of unsafe overtaking manoeuvres.

“It comes only months after work was completed on the extension of a westbound overtaking lane 29 kilometres east of Gunnedah.

“Both overtaking lane projects have been completed as part of the government’s four-year program to improve safety and travel times on the Oxley Highway.

“Elsewhere on the highway, the Meridian rest area intersection upgrade, about 24 kilometres west of Gunnedah, is completed and will improve safety for road users at this location.

“At Mullaley, the westbound road shoulder at the Grain Valley Way intersection has been widened so vehicles can pass right turning vehicles.

“There are also dedicated turning lanes for motorists exiting the Oxley Highway at the Black Stump Way intersection as well as better line marking and signage.”

Work on a fourth project, a right turn lane into Howe Street from the Oxley Highway at Carroll, has entered the final stage and is expected to be complete in coming weeks.
