Northern Inland Businesses Congratulated for Sustainability Achievement
250 businesses were today congratulated for their sustainability efforts, including dairy farmers, dry-cleaners and financial, health and property services, at a ceremony at the Tamworth Golf Club.
Kevin Anderson, Member for Tamworth said by participating in NSW Government business efficiency programs, local businesses are saving more than $370,000 per year on bills, improving our environment and increasing their profits. “It’s inspiring to see what our local community has achieved.
“Local company, Grain Products Australia is able to save $100,000 in energy costs per year through the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage Program. The savings come from simple, practical actions, like cutting the time that equipment idles and fixing steam and compressed air leaks.
Wests Entertainment Group is saving more than $30,000 per year by improving air conditioning and refrigeration efficiency.”
Mr Anderson said small businesses were also improving environmental performance and saving on power costs through the Energy Efficiency for Small Business Program.
“Challenge Laundry Services received $2,650 towards a new air compressor and more energy efficient lights and is saving almost $1,000 and 4.5 megawatt hours of electricity per year.”
Small businesses participating in the program get expert energy assessments to identity savings, up to $5,000 in matched funding and four hours of technical support to get the work done.
"The energy efficiency skills of the local workforce were also being improved for the long-term, with locally-developed training being rolled out across the region from October."
The Northern Inland Sustainable Business Network and New England TAFE secured $77,800 under the Energy Efficiency Training Program to develop an accredited course for people who sell electrical products.
“The training will educate retail staff about the long-term energy efficiency of products and appliances to, in turn, help their customers be more energy efficient,” Mr Anderson said.
Other trainers and electrical retailers will be able to use the course from early next year.
Across NSW, 15,300 organisations have taken advantage of NSW Government programs to save $68.5 million per year - $36.5 million in energy costs alone.
Administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage, the five key programs available for businesses are Sustainability Advantage, Energy Saver, NABERS and the Energy Efficiency for Small Business and Energy Efficiency Training Programs.
