NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner today welcomed the new Nationals Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson on the opening day of the 55th NSW Parliament.
Kevin Anderson is one of seven new Nationals MPs to be elected to the Legislative Assembly.
Mr Stoner congratulated Mr Anderson on his success and his first day in Parliament.
“Kevin Anderson is an outstanding person who will no doubt make an outstanding Member of Parliament,” Mr Stoner said.
“Kevin has worked hard to get to where he is, having won the ground-breaking community preselection held in Tamworth, and then won the general election with 12.5 per cent swing towards him.
“Kevin’s background as a former local newsreader and communications and business development manager for Hunter New England Area Health Service show he is in touch with the local community and understands their needs,” Mr Stoner said.
Mr Stoner said Mr Anderson’s election as one of nine new Nationals MPs, including two in the Legislative Council, would ensure better representation for people living in regional areas.
“The recent state election represented a massive win for the Nationals, and we are committed to delivering on our plans to make regional NSW number one again,” Mr Stoner said.
“In the seats where the Nationals fielded candidates, we had an amazing 90 per cent success rate – winning five new seats and electing a total of 18 members in the lower house.
“The election also served as a strong rebuke to Country Labor and their rural Independent allies for their poor record of failing to deliver for regional communities.
“After 16 years of neglect from the Labor-aligned country independents and the Country Labor faction of the Labor party, people in regional communities had simply had enough.
“The Nationals now have their strongest representation in Parliament in years, and we are determined to repay the voters’ faith by restoring quality services and infrastructure to regional areas,” he said.
