Media Releases - Kevin Anderson Media Release

NSW Nationals Leader and Shadow Roads Minister Andrew Stoner and Nationals candidate for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said that under a NSW Liberals & Nationals government the local Tamworth community could expect to see a change in the approach taken to law and order and antisocial behaviour.

To date the NSW Liberals & Nationals have released a number of Law & Order and Policing policies, including:

  • Making our Streets Safe Again – A trial of Sobering Up Centres , with one to be in a regional centre like Tamworth, strengthening move along powers and introduction of a new 'drunk and disorderly' offence in the Summary Offences Act;
  • Police and Youth Clubs Policy – $20 million in funding for new PCYC facilities;
  • Police Technology Plan – $20 million in new high-tech equipment for police officers;
  • Reform the NSW Police Highway Patrol – Introduction of a standalone Highway Patrol State Command headed by an Assistant Commissioner for Road Safety;
  • Graffiti Crackdown – Introduction of a You Spray, You Pay policy; and
  • 21st Century Neighbourhood Watch Program.

Andrew Stoner said that regional communities like Tamworth should not have to put up with antisocial behaviour, graffiti or drunk and disorderly conduct.

"Police do a great job in Tamworth but we believe we can create a better environment in which they can carry out their work," Andrew Stoner said.

"By strengthening move along powers, introducing a new offence of 'drunk and disorderly' and rolling out a You Spray, You Pay program we are saying enough is enough, antisocial and drunken behaviour will no longer be tolerated.

"But we are not all stick and no carrot. We also have plans to strengthen the role that PCYCs play in reducing antisocial behaviour through important sports and recreational activities.

"Only the NSW Liberals & Nationals have the policies and strength of character to deliver stronger, safer communities," Andrew Stoner said.

The Nationals candidate for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said that he admired the work the region's police do and fully supported the NSW Liberals & Nationals plans to strengthen the powers and options available to them.

"In speaking with many in the community there is some concern about night-time antisocial behaviour on our streets," Kevin Anderson said.

"Police, pubs and clubs are all out there doing the right thing – the onus is on people out enjoying themselves to take it easy, look after each other and behave responsibly."
