INVESTING IN OUR MEDICAL FUTURE

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today warmly welcomed 13 new medical interns who have just commenced their career with a 2 year stint at Tamworth Base Hospital.

Mr Anderson thanked the interns for choosing Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital and acknowledged their arrival as a boost for patients, clinicians and the community. "We have a great opportunity to increase our long term medical staff ranks and I am sure that our existing senior doctors will provide them with the very best training.

"I know that a number of these interns moved here with their families, so it's important 

to provide them with a great experience socially. There are also a number of locals who have chosen to train here, including Edward White from Boggabri.

"Partners, husbands, wives and families are critical to the decision making process. We need to look after them as well so that they see the lifestyle opportunities which come with living in our region.  The ultimate outcome is for these interns and their families to become permanent members of our community.

"This is an exciting period as work has begun on Regional Cancer Care Centre, and the Tamworth Hospital redevelopment commences next next year. This will ensure we have the very best facilities and working conditions for our staff.

“The interns have completed their university component of their medical training and now start two years on the job training, under the supervision of senior clinicians. They will experience all facets of working in a large rural referral hospital, including the emergency department, wards, oncology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, as well as surgery. This gives them the opportunity to choose a speciality or hone their area of interest.

"The arrival of these interns is another strong example of the NSW Government’s commitment to regional health. Tamworth is a great place to live, work and raise a family.” Mr Anderson said.
