LOCAL RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON AGEING STRATEGY
Residents in the New England region can have their say on the development of the NSW Government’s Ageing Strategy at a local consultation session in Tamworth next month.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said there are around one million people in NSW who are 65 years or older and this figure is projected to grow rapidly.
“The contribution older people make through volunteering, mentoring, community-based activities and in the workplace is immense – and while many live active and healthy lives, the fact remains we need fresh approaches to meet the challenges ahead,” Mr Anderson said.
“As part of the strategy, we need to consider how to best prepare for the rapid ageing of our population and how to ensure the issues of ageing and older persons are brought into the mainstream of policy making.”
“This is an opportunity for residents in the New England region to have their say.”
The New England consultation will be held on 11 January 2012 at the Tamworth Community Centre, corner of Peel and Darling Street, Tamworth, starting at 11:30am.
To register, call Tulips Meeting Management on (02) 4984 2554.
The implementation of the Ageing Strategy is an O’Farrell Government election commitment through its Smarter, Stronger, Healthier, Safer social policy framework.
A Summary Paper outlining the key findings from September’s Ageing Roundtable, along with consultation details, is now available at www.adhc.nsw.gov.au.
The Paper will help inform people attending the consultations and highlights priority areas including social inclusion, health and well-being, housing, transport, mature workers, volunteering, attitudes to ageing and planning for later life.
The strategy will be guided in its policies and programs by the principles of independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and dignity.
It will also address the barriers that may prevent people having the most positive experience possible as they age and remain involved in their communities.
