LET YOUR HEAD RULE YOUR WALLET THIS CHRISTMAS

In the lead up to Christmas, Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson is reminding shoppers to do their homework and follow some useful tips offered by NSW Fair Trading.

Mr Anderson said the Fair Trading Christmas shopping checklist recommends consumers plan ahead and avoid getting caught out with credit, refund or warranty problems after the festive season.

“With Christmas just around the corner it is timely that consumers are reminded about their shopping rights under the Australian Consumer Law,” he said.

“The Christmas shopping checklist contains tips for hassle-free Christmas shopping and is available in seven languages other than English."

Mr Anderson said some consumers mistakenly believe they are automatically entitled to a refund if they change their mind, or the gift is unsuitable or the wrong size.

“Many retailers offer refund conditions above and beyond their legal requirements as a gesture of goodwill,” he said.

Mr Anderson said under the Australian Consumer Law consumers automatically receive guarantees that cover goods and services sold, hired or leased, including second-hand goods.

“Consumer guarantees clearly set out consumer rights and responsibilities when something goes wrong, including the right to repair, replace or refund,” he said.

“Suppliers must ensure goods are of an acceptable quality, fit for their intended purpose and match the description or sample.”

Mr Anderson said people can avoid costly mistakes by thinking about what they want a product to do.

“Research the product’s features and shop around to compare quality and price,” he said.

“When shopping online, only use known and respected sellers and sites. If buying products from overseas always check that the manufacturer can supply service arrangements in Australia for repairs.”

Mr Anderson said that well-informed consumers have a far better chance of a positive outcome.

“The most important lesson to remember is to always keep your receipts,” he said.

Suppliers are required under the Australian Consumer Law to issue a receipt when the goods cost $75 or more (excl GST).
