GUNNEDAH TO TAMWORTH POINT TO POINT CAMERAS NOW OPERATIONAL

New point to point cameras detecting heavy vehicle speeding are now operating on the Oxley Highway between Gunnedah and Tamworth.

“This technology aims to slow speeding heavy vehicle drivers and make NSW highways and country roads safer for everyone to use,” Mr Anderson said.

“The new point to point cameras measure the time it takes a heavy vehicle to travel between Glenn Innes and Inverell on the Oxley Highway and then calculates the vehicle’s average speed.

“If the heavy vehicle’s average speed is higher than the speed limit for the length of road, the driver will be penalised for speeding.

“This technology is about improving both the safety of heavy vehicle drivers and other road users by reducing heavy vehicle speeding.

“Speed is all too often the cause of fatal crashes and point to point technology will help tackle this problem.

“To help change driver behaviour there will be an initial warning period where warning letters instead of infringements will be issued to speeding heavy vehicle drivers.

“Warning signs will also be posted at the start and end of point to point enforcement lengths,” Mr Anderson said.

The point to point program addresses a recommendation by the Auditor-General’s investigation into heavy vehicle safety in 2009.

The Gunnedah to Tamworth length add to the nine existing point to point camera locations already operating on the Pacific Highway, Federal Highway, Hume Highway and the Great Western Highway. A further 11 point to point enforcement areas are currently being developed.
