Anderson – Calls for Awareness when using ATMS

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has asked the community to keep vigilant when using ATMS around the city.

The call comes after being contacted by a number of people concerned that they were being watched while using an ATM.

Mr Anderson said "I have been contacted by a number of people and they have told me they believe they were watched, followed and then hassled by juveniles after leaving an ATM.

"This is very disturbing, and I urge people to be aware of their surroundings when using an ATM.

"In one incident, a man was approached by a number of youths after using an ATM, a scuffle broke out, his wallet was stolen and they ran off.

"These people are opportunistic thieves. However, incidents like these can be avoided by thinking about your security when using an ATM.

"I've spoken to the police about it and they have advised they are aware there may be possible connections between a few incidents of late.

"I am asking people just to be aware when using an ATM, be aware of who is standing close by or perhaps someone or a group they believe maybe watching the ATM. Think about your personal security, if you have doubts move away.

"If you don’t feel comfortable or believe the ATM is being watched please call the police and let them handle it.

"This is part of the problem we are facing at the moment, there is a group of young juveniles who are causing havoc in our city. We need to get on top of it and not give them any opportunity.

As a community we need to crack down on crime and let the police know of every incident. We need to continue to report crime to the police, these problems can't be addressed if police are unaware of what is happening. The Crime Stoppers hotline is 1800 333 000.
