Community Blockade Ends near Spring Ridge

The community blockade near Spring Ridge will be lifted this morning following successful negotiations between the landholders and Coal Seam Gas Company Santos.

Santos have agreed to work with the community and pause all drilling activity, including water bore monitoring and a gas pilot well at the Georges Island site on the Liverpool Plains until the Namoi Water Study is released next year.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said, "As a result of these discussions we have been able to find a way through this difficult situation. This has been an excellent example of how continued negotiations and discussions have led to a suitable outcome. We need to get the balance right and this is part of the process.

"Santos have agreed to limit their activity on the site to just fencing and minor earthworks before they vacate the site.

"They have also agreed to undertake an intensive community meeting and consultation program to ensure residents are more informed about future works in the region.

"We need to understand that Santos have been a part of our community for some time and I support their important ongoing exploration work to develop our energy resources in our region around Gunnedah and Narrabri but away from the sensitive black soil plains.

"I thank the NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher, Caroona Coal Action Group's Tim Duddy, NSW Farmers Fiona Simpson, local landholders and Santos for their efforts in reaching this sensible outcome.

"This action will now provide farmers with a secure peace of mind to continue on with their harvesting activities." Mr Anderson concluded.
