TRAFFIC LIGHTS SWITCHED ON TOMORROW
Kevin Anderson MP, Member for Tamworth, announced today the traffic lights at the intersection of Bridge Street (Oxley Highway) and Belmore Street will be activated tomorrow. These lights have been installed as part of a NSW Government initiative to improve safety for pedestrians.
"This is great news for the community – increasing safety for pedestrians crossing the Oxley Highway" Mr Anderson said.
"The $1.2 million improvements are the final part of a Roads and Maritime Services commitment to upgrading marked pedestrian crossings on multi-lane state roads at 59 sites across NSW.
"The Oxley Highway is one of the busiest roads in Tamworth and this will increase safety for pedestrians including those with mobility and vision impairments.
"Pedestrians are some of our most vulnerable road users and traffic lights like the ones being switched on today in Tamworth are an example of how we are improving road safety.
"Pedestrians, in particular the older people, should always use available crossing facilities and are reminded to be watchful as cars do not always stop."
Flashing pedestrian safety lights have also been installed in the Brisbane and Napier Streets school precinct in Tamworth and Bloomfield Street school precinct Gunnedah.
