TAMWORTH HOCKEY SCORES FUNDING WIN
Tamworth’s popular hockey facilities will receive a major financial boost with the Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley MP presenting $160,000 in funding to the Tamworth Hockey Association this Friday.
“The regional centre of Tamworth will receive a $160,000 of the $5.5 million granted to Hockey NSW by the NSW State Government to assist in completing a re-surfacing of its playing surface,” Mr Annesley said.
Kevin Anderson MP, Member for Tamworth said, “Hockey is one of the most popular sports in Tamworth, with several home grown state national and Olympic stars including Michael York.
“The new playing surface will be welcomed by our current players and stars of the future and also boost our chances when we bid for regional, state and national tournaments.
“Having Graham personally come to Tamworth to make the announcement highlights the importance the NSW Liberals Nationals Government place on regional and rural NSW,” Mr Anderson added.
Hockey NSW President Jeff McEwen said he was excited by the level of support for the future growth of hockey in regional areas of NSW.
“Tamworth Hockey Association has built and maintained their facilities for decades and this injection of funds will provide a welcome enhancement towards quality hockey facilities in this region.
“The annual York Cup and Kim Small Shield carnival have been growing constantly over the past three years, providing opportunities for players, umpires and coaches to develop their skills from a host of accredited personnel and elite athletes returning to the region for these memorable carnival days,” Mr McEwen said.
Mr Annesley said, “I’ve been reliably informed the Tamworth Hockey Association is renowned throughout the State for its commitment to junior development and participation in all categories of hockey.
“Hockey is a fantastic sport and its development and growth is testament to the sport’s accessibility and enjoyment for boys, girls, men and women of all ages.
“The NSW Government is committed to supporting regional sports development and will continue to work with Hockey NSW to deliver long-term benefits for communities throughout the state,” Mr Annesley said.
