Anderson pushes for Gas Pipeline down the Newell
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has renewed his call for a proposed gas pipeline from Narrabri to Wellington to run down the Newell Highway as opposed to below the black soil plains near Gunnedah.
Mr Anderson said, "Eastern Star Gas has lodged an application to construct a gas pipeline from Narrabri to Wellington, highlighting four possible route locations. Sections of their suggested pipeline routes run below the black soil plains on the edge of the Tamworth Electorate.
"After seeing firsthand the damage caused by another gas pipeline near Coolah and listening to landholders and local farmers, I don’t believe the proposed routes are acceptable.
"There is a potential risk of damaging the rich agricultural land and the serious social implications where farmers are left feeling uncertain about their land and their future.
"In meetings with local farmers and members of the Mullaley Gas Pipeline Accord I stated I would fight to have an alternate route found for the pipeline.
"I have also recommended to Eastern Star Gas that they explore the option of the Newell Highway.
"In March this year I visited a site near Coolah where erosion had exposed a section of the gas pipeline. Due to the constant boggy conditions and the nature of the soil on the plains it took some time to repair the damage.
"This visit reminded me of the potential damage which can occur.
"Subsequently, I have asked the Mullaley Gas Pipeline Accord to supply me with any available scientific data relating to soil fragility in the areas which could be affected by the proposed routes. This information will greatly assist in stating their case.
"In the meantime I will continue to urge Eastern Star Gas to look at alternate routes including the Newell Highway," Mr Anderson concluded.
