GETTING ON WITH THE JOB IN TAMWORTH

Two consultancy tenders had been awarded for the redevelopment of Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital, the Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner, and the Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson, announced today.

Aurecon has been appointed as project manager and McConnell Smith and Johnson will be the architects.

“I’m proud that the NSW Government has invested $100 million for the redevelopment of Tamworth hospital,” Minister Skinner said.

“This is something Tamworth has been waiting for a long time and it’s pleasing to see this project moving ahead,” she said.

“Planning is underway and a detailed design will also be undertaken, in consultation with clinicians and the local health board,” Mrs Skinner said.

Mr Anderson said the development proved that the NSW Government was getting on with the job of redeveloping the state’s ageing hospitals.

“I am delighted to see the architects appointed and it will be exciting to see how the plans will develop. We need to ensure that we cater for the present and future health needs of the New England region,” Mr Anderson said.

“I know there are a number of community groups such as the friends of Nioka who have provided valuable input. We are on track and I am proud to be part of this much needed development for our region,” Mr Anderson said.

The redevelopment focuses on clinical services, including: medical surgical and inpatient beds; day surgery unit; paediatrics unit; maternity, birthing suite and special care nursery; emergency (including resuscitation bay); renal dialysis unit; oral health unit; operating suite and recovery; cardiac catheterisation laboratory; medical imaging; pharmacy; nuclear medicine; ambulatory care centre; and non-clinical services such as kitchen, loading dock, linen and waste management.

Construction is expected to start in mid-2013 and will take about three years.
