SHOW YOUR MONEY STUFF FOR A CHANCE TO WIN BIG
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has encouraged local high school students in years 8-10 to get involved in this year’s Money Stuff Challenge.
Mr Anderson said the popular consumer education competition explores issues including buying a car, internet shopping, signing up to a mobile plan and being scam smart.
“NSW Fair Trading’s Money Stuff Challenge offers a cash prize pool of up to $16,000 and challenges young people to develop fun and creative messages that engage and educate young consumers.
“The prize pool is split evenly between regional and metropolitan students, with winners to receive $2,000 for their school and $200 for themselves.
“All categories also include highly commended prizes of $1,000 for the school and $100 for each student.
"Independent judges assess each entry on how well they work:
- Promotes understanding of a consumer issue for young consumers;
- Communicates to a youth audience;
- Explains why the issue is important for young people to know; and
- Delivers the intended message creatively, succinctly and in an original manner.
“Last year’s prize-winning entries included: an animated video about online scams; an interactive presentation about buying a car; and, a rap song about protecting your PIN and how to avoid being scammed.
“When this year’s winners are announced, I am hoping to see our local talented students represented.
“The competition is now open, with entries closing on 5 August and winners announced in November during Fair Trading Week,” Mr Anderson concluded.

NOMINATE AN OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson is calling on locals to nominate for the NSW Volunteer of the Year Award as Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week 14 – 20 May 2012.
Mr Anderson said “These annual awards, run by the Centre for Volunteering, recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions of the 2 million plus volunteers in NSW.
“The awards recognise exceptional volunteers in several categories, including youth, senior, team, corporate and volunteer management.
“Regional winners will be selected in October and November with State winners announced on International Volunteer Day, 5 December.
“I know there are many generous volunteers in our community who would be worthy nominees for these awards.
“The passion and commitment of our volunteers brings people together and makes our community stronger.
“I hope these awards not only raise the profile of our dedicated volunteers but also encourage more people to think about how they can give back to their community.”
“Volunteers play a vital role in promoting community harmony and strength.
“Volunteers in NSW contribute more than 240 million hours of voluntary work each year, estimated to be worth a remarkable $5 billion.

ANDERSON ENJOYS GUNNEDAH SHOW
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson would like to congratulate and thank Mr George Truman on a wonderful 2012 Gunnedah Show.
"I would like to congratulate and thank Mr George Truman for a wonderful experience at the Gunnedah Show.
"My family and I had a great day out and I was fortunate enough to be involved in a variety of events.
"I began the day with a tour of the showground followed by meeting with some of the exhibitors.
"It was great to see the number of exhibits was up from last year. This shows to me how much the community is involved in their annual show.
"I really enjoyed being part of the Grand Parade, it was sensational to see the antique machinery, and Ute muster as well as the number of entries in the local Show Girl Competition.
"My two sons, Sam and Will, were very delighted to be able to present the prizes to the winners of the Ute Muster and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the art in the Art Gallery.
"It was a great day out and I was pleasing to see the large number of community members supporting a local event.
"I would like to thank the volunteers and the show society for the wonderful effort and all the hard work that comes with putting the show together. Without their support and dedication, the core aspects of country shows would not exist.
"I recommend that everyone should experience Gunnedah Show and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere that it provides," Mr Anderson concluded.

FUNDING FOR GUNNEDAH ARTS PROJECTS
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has announced $7,000 in funding for Arts North-West to help develop local artistic and cultural programs.
Mr Anderson said the grant is part of a funding boost for NSW’s 14 Regional Arts Boards across rural and regional NSW.
“This funding will help Arts North-West continue its creative work in the community providing local residents with access to artistic and cultural resources.
“Creative arts can have many positive effects for regional communities including developing creativity, skill and talent, contributing to a culture of innovation, and supporting cultural tolerance, social well-being and greater community identity.
“Arts North-West will now be able to further partnerships and relationships with a range of arts and non-arts funding bodies to help finance specialised arts and cultural programs tailored to meet the needs of our region.
“The range of initiatives that could be supported by this funding include:
- support for professional and artistic development;
- support for the employment of regional NSW professional artists and professional arts practitioners; and
- encouraging audience development opportunities for regional communities.”
“This latest funding boost will help Arts North-West to continue their outstanding work in the region and have access to the same level of artistic and cultural resources to our city counterparts.
“These programs are essential in the community as they play a central role in creating vibrant and thriving arts and culture activities that so many of us enjoy.
“We are committed to supporting and growing our regional arts and culture as part of our efforts to revitalise our regions,” Mr Anderson concluded.

MORE SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE FLASHING LIGHTS
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today announced that two more schools in the region will benefit from the NSW Government’s announcement of a major expansion of the school zone flashing light program.
“I’m very pleased to announce that St Joseph's Primary School in West Tamworth and Boggabri Central School will receive flashing lights as part of the NSW Government’s announcement of the school zone flashing light program.
"Flashing lights slow motorists down around schools and warn them they are approaching a school – this is great news for St Joseph's Primary School in West Tamworth and for Boggabri Central School.
“The lights will be installed on Bridge Street, Tamworth (Oxley Highway) and Wee Waa Street, Boggabri (Kamilaroi Highway) and will operate automatically between 8am and 9.30am; and between 2.30pm and 4pm on school days during term time.
"The lights operate automatically when school zone speed limits are in force and increase drivers’ awareness of school zones.
"Flashing lights are linked to a central computer system which operates lights across the state.
"The lights use LED (light-emitting diode) technology which provides brighter light and is more energy efficient.
"Trials of flashing lights have found flashing lights helped to slow motorists by an average of seven kilometres an hour when they enter a school zone.
"The rollout of the additional flashing lights in country school zones will start next month.
"Between 2003 and 2010 there were 277 crashes involving school-aged pedestrians between five and 16-years-olds in a school zone during school zone operating times.
"A total of 1,390 school zones will have flashing lights under the NSW Government program to be rolled out by June 2015," Mr Anderson concluded.
