Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today said work is progressing to select a preferred route for a second bridge above the rail line at Gunnedah.

Mr Anderson said Roads and Maritime Services is considering all issues raised by the community and stakeholders including Gunnedah Shire Council and the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

"The second bridge over the rail line at Gunnedah is one of the signature projects of the NSW Government's Bridges for the Bush program.

“The location of the new bridge is important to the Gunnedah community and it is important to get it right, including access to Barber Street.

“The NSW Government understands the importance of access to Barber Street and is committed to working with Gunnedah Shire Council to minimise the impact on the business precinct,” Mr Anderson said.

Gunnedah Shire Mayor Owen Hasler outlined the importance of the access to Barber Street at a meeting arranged by Mr Anderson with RMS officers and Mr Andrew Huckel, Deputy Chief of Staff to Roads Minister, Duncan Gay.

“Acting General Manager, Colin Formann, and I made it very clear that the community expectation, and Council pre-requisite, is access and egress from the overpass to Barber Street,” stated Councillor Hasler.

“We were appreciative of Mr Anderson’s efforts in arranging the meeting such that meaningful dialogue could be had and information  conveyed about the progress of the project,” concluded Councillor Hasler.

Mr Anderson said the preferred route would be announced and displayed for community comment in coming months.

“The shortlisted options were displayed last year. Community feedback in response included the impact to businesses, traffic flow, travel times, the existing New Street level crossing and property access.

“Roads and Maritime will continue to work with the community to develop the preferred option which will be finalised later this year,” Mr Anderson concluded.
