TAMWORTH AIRPORT SHORTLISTED FOR UPGRADE FUNDING
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has welcomed today’s announcement that Tamworth Regional Airport has been shortlisted to be upgraded.
Mr Anderson said that this is fantastic news and now Tamworth Regional Council will be invited to make a detailed application for the multi-million dollar upgrade of the airport.
“Plans for the upgrade were unveiled in January this year and included refurbishing the terminal, strengthening and expanding the main apron.
“We now have three airlines flying into Tamworth with the prospect of extra air services being provided by those companies. We need to prepare and plan for the growth and the way we do that is to expand on our facilities so we are ready.
“There is $95 million in NSW Government funding for the regional airports program and I want to make sure that we get our fair share.
“After lodging and expression of interest in January, we have now moved to the next stage and I will be doing all I can to support Tamworth Regional Council in their push to obtain the money needed to upgrade the airport.
“Our local tourism industry makes a significant contribution to our economy and the Government is keen to support that contribution by investing in regional infrastructure.
“By enhancing Tamworth Airport it will significantly increase visitor numbers to our region and support the local economy.
“Upgrading the airport is part of my strong transport plan as we work toward building a better region.
“I congratulate Tamworth Regional Council on making it to the shortlist and wish them the very best in the final round of application for funds,” Mr Anderson said.
Tamworth Regional Council Mayor Col Murray said this is a very exciting time for the growth of Tamworth Airport.
“Along with that excitement brings growth pressure, but we are very pleased that our application has reached the second phase and we will be submitting a detailed and winnable application,” Mayor Col Murray said.
