THINK TWICE OVER PROPOSED CHAFFEY DAM RELEASE - ANDERSON
Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson has voiced his disapproval at the decision by the Commonwealth to release massive environmental water flows from Chaffey Dam.
Mr Anderson said Peel Valley Water Users Association had contacted his office concerned with the proposed release of 6.257 gigalitres of water from Chaffey Dam before the end of June.
“I understand the Commonwealth is pushing to release some of its water which sits in Chaffey Dam, to meet downstream environmental needs in the Barwon-Darling system,” Mr Anderson said.
“While the Commonwealth has made this decision, as the local MP it is important that local water needs are not put at risk because of any release from Chaffey.
“Only this weekend I hosted a visit by the Deputy Premier John Barilaro where we met with a number of drought-affected farmers in my Electorate.
“In an increasingly dry environment, all water users, including irrigators and council, need assurances their needs can be met if rains continue to hold off,” Mr Anderson concluded.
“With no major rains forecast for the near future, the outlook is continuing to look bleak for farmers and water users, including irrigators and council.
“I urge concerned irrigators to contact their local Federal MP to highlight their anxieties over the proposed Commonwealth water release”, Mr Anderson concluded
