TENDER RELEASE FOR WORKS TO IMPROVE TAMWORTH TRAIN STATION
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads and Rail and Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today announced that Tamworth customers will soon benefit from improved facilities following the release of a tender for upgrade works at the Tamworth Train Station.
“This is great news for Tamworth customers as this is the first step to upgrading the interchange station to make it more accessible for everyone using public transport.
“The tender is for planned work to deliver improvements including installing automatic opening doors at the station and a new family accessible toilet.
“We want public transport to be comfortable and easy for our customers to use and that’s what these improvements are all about.
“As well as these improvements I am continuing discussions with Transport for NSW and NSW TrainLink about a daily return service from Tamworth to Newcastle and Sydney. Tamworth is a growing city and the need for affordable and convenient travel options is becoming greater as time goes on.
“There are a good number of people using rail and it is the preferred travel option for seniors and those with mobility challenges like wheelchairs and walking frames. If we can provide an acceptable timetable and a daily return service then I believe those numbers will grow.
“We want to see tourism and business in the Tamworth electorate grow and I believe delivering a fast, reliable, comfortable and more frequent rail service will go a long way to achieving this.”
The upgrade is funded by Transport for NSW for NSW TrainLink customers and is being delivered by Sydney Trains as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.
Applications for the tender close on 30 August 2016 and the contract is expected to be awarded by the end of the year.
