Members of the Gunnedah, Tamworth and Quirindi Aboriginal communities have been presented with a life-changing training opportunity at TAFE NSW.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the Certificate III in Tourism is a unique course that has been customised to address the needs of Aboriginal communities.
“This is a course that focusses on environmentally suitable and sustainable practices, researching information on Australian indigenous culture and preparing specialised interpretive content on flora, fauna and landscape.
“TAFE NSW has consulted with local Aboriginal Lands Councils and key stakeholders and identified a shortfall in tourism training opportunities for Aboriginal students in this region.
“This is an example of how TAFE NSW is constantly innovating to meet the evolving tourism needs of the community and demonstrates the commitment to delivering a highly-skilled workforce for the future.
“I am delighted to see the involvement of a man for who I have very high regard in Len Waters, who has a long association with TAFE.
“Len is a Kamilaroi man who loves to share his deep understanding of the region’s cultural history. He established Len Waters Aboriginal Cultural Tours in 2015 and said the demand for this type of tourism around the New England and North West is growing rapidly,” Mr Anderson said.
Mr Waters said there is a real thirst for cultural tours from national and international visitors.
“But you need the skills and knowledge to present it confidently, you have to know what you’re doing. There are tremendous opportunities in the region for more cultural tourism hubs and in a business-sense we can all feed off one-another.”
“It’s important we do this because our sites and our elders, with the knowledge, are getting older so the quicker we can educate people about our culture the better.”
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to design and deliver guided tours in their local areas with the aim of preserving the cultural heritage for many years to come.
