SPEED ZONE CHANGES ALONG OXLEY
HIGHWAY TO IMPROVE SAFETY
A number of speed zone changes along the Oxley Highway have been implemented and more will occur in the next few months at key locations to improve safety for motorists.
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads and Rail, Kevin Anderson said the changes are the result of the Route Safety Review of the 514km Oxley Highway from Port Macquarie to Coonabarabran.
“The section of the Oxley Highway between Long Flat and Walcha is a windy road with a very high rate of crashes,” Mr Anderson said.
“Of the 44 crashes along this section since 2008, 75 per cent have been the result of speed and 27 were motorcycle crashes, and almost all crashes were head-on or run-off-road type crashes.”
In all, speed zone changes will be implemented affecting less than 50 kilometres of the 514 kilometre Oxley Highway.
The aim of reducing the speed limit west of Mount Seaview Road is to improve road safety and reduce the number and severity of crashes.
The route safety review involved extensive consultation in 2013 with communities along this stretch of road, including feedback sessions in Warren, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Walcha and Wauchope, with the final report published in 2015.
The route safety review recognised a strong need to review speed zones and their lengths, and enhance road user behavioural campaigns, especially those targeting motorcyclists, speeding and fatigue between Port Macquarie and Coonabarabran.
Roads and Maritime will keep the community informed on when these speed limit changes will be implemented.
Speed zone changes implemented
