Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson has welcomed the latest and record intake of 20 new interns to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital.

Mr Anderson said the $211 million Tamworth Hospital redevelopment had created a leading-edge teaching facility and this year’s draft of new interns will bring enthusiasm and talent to the region.

“This is great news for Tamworth and the region to welcome this new team of young doctors who want to make a difference and develop their skills in the public health system.

“Interns are a vital part of the professional team at the frontline of the health system and Tamworth is providing a great place for these young men and women to learn from some of the best in the business.

“The young doctors will spend 24 months there, as part of the Rural Preferential Recruitment program, which allows JMOs to nominate their preference to work in a rural or regional facility.

“The Government invests around $107 million on the Hunter New England health internship program each year and during their one-year internship, the graduates will complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency as required by the Medical Board of Australia.

“The second year cohort focuses on consolidating professional practice and experience in different clinical settings.

“The interns have the opportunity to try a range of specialties at Tamworth Hospital including general surgery, paediatrics, general medicine, intensive care medicine, anaesthetics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, rehabilitation, obstetrics and emergency medicine,” Mr Anderson concluded..

Executive Director Rural and Regional Health Service, Susan Heyman said the hospital’s reputation continues to attract doctors wanting to make the most of their first year out of university.

“Most of this year’s JMOs have chosen to return to Tamworth Hospital after completing placement here, which speaks volumes about their experiences and many of the intake are also from Tamworth, or nearby and are excited about the opportunity to strengthen the rural and regional workforce,” Ms Heyman said.
