PREFERRED ROUTE FOR NEW BRIDGE OVER TANGARATTA CREEK
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today announced Roads and Maritime Services has finalised a preferred option and concept design for an upgrade of the Oxley Highway at Tangaratta Creek.
Mr Anderson said he design involves road realignment and building a new bridge just west of the existing bridge, and requires about 700 metres of new road approaches.
“The revised cost of the new bridge and approaches is about $8 million and a detailed design and environmental assessment is expected to be completed by mid 2014.
“This is an important step in the upgrade and the community will be pleased to see the project moving forward.
"The Tangaratta Creek Bridge, built in 1954, is located 14.1 kilometres west of Tamworth on the Oxley Highway, a State road between Tamworth and Gunnedah.
"The new bridge will be a modern concrete structure designed to meet the future transport needs of this area and reduce future maintenance costs.
“It will be a wider bridge and will deliver a safer road for commuters, and improve efficiency and productivity for businesses which use the road to transport freight."
“The preferred route will provide the best overall balance between functional, environmental, ecological, social and economic factors,” Mr Anderson concluded.
Roads and Maritime expects to begin work in early 2015.
