NEW EARLY INTERVENTION INNOVATION FUND ADDS NEW ELEMENT TO LOCAL DRUG FIGHT
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said a new fund focusing on early intervention with young people at risk of using drugs could add a vital piece to the puzzle in the fight against drugs in our community.
Mr Anderson said the Government is calling for expressions of interest from non-government organisations (NGO’s) working in the drug and alcohol treatment sector in the Early Intervention Innovation Fund.
“Our local NGO’s along with the local Ice Action Group (IAG) have been doing incredible work in the space of drug and alcohol prevention and treatment and this new fund could further enhance the great work that is being done.
“We know as part of the work the IAG has been doing that early intervention is the key. If we can target those young people most at risk then we can take more preventative measures rather than reactive.
“This is a unique opportunity for our local NGO’s to develop new and innovative ideas to increase and improve early intervention services for young people in our community.
“We’re already looking at rehabilitation and crisis support services, so by adding in an early intervention program we can start to cover more ground in the fight against illicit drugs in our community.”
The Early Intervention Innovation Fund provides two funding pathways including:
The Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Evaluation Grants – focusing on building the evaluation capacity of NGOs to evaluate existing programs to build an evidence base and ultimately improve program delivery. Grants of $30,000 to $150,000 will be provided over two years.
The Alcohol and Drug Early Intervention Innovation Grants – which allows NGO’s and their partners, including the NSW health system, to drive new innovative approaches for the delivery of early intervention to vulnerable young people. Grants of $50,000 to $1 million over two years will be awarded.
Expressions of interest for the grants will close on 28 November 2016.
