MORE SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME DOING IT TOUGH

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today said local victims of crime with money problems will now receive free financial counselling.

Mr Anderson said the free, independent and confidential support will be available to victims of crime across NSW, thanks to a new partnership between the NSW Government’s Victims Services and the Financial Counsellors’ Association of NSW (FCAN).

“Under the new reciprocal partnership victims of crime facing financial hardship will have access to the expertise of FCAN members, and FCAN will also put their clients in touch with Victims Services if they learn they’ve suffered as a result of a crime.

“Whether it’s keeping up with the bills or keeping the fridge stocked, trained and accredited financial experts will advise victims on ways they can address their money issues.

“It may be as simple as helping them access the financial hardship services of banks and government agencies.

“This is a small thing we can do, which can be a big help in their recovery from trauma.”

Victims Services offers free counselling to help victims with psychological trauma suffered as a result of a crime.

The financial hardship referral protocol was developed with assistance from the Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation as part of its ‘Take Kare’ mission to support victims of violence.

The Foundation’s director and founder Ralph Kelly raised the issue of financial hardship for victims of crime with the NSW Government after his 18-year-old son Thomas was killed in a one-punch attack in Kings Cross in 2012.
