Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today announced the Walcha Shire Council has been awarded funding to clear their backlog of water infrastructure upgrades.

“Walcha Shire Council will receive $900,000 to upgrade and expand the Walcha Waste Water Treatment Plant, providing the community with a modern system that meets today’s health and environmental standards,” Mr Anderson said.

“The Walcha Waste Water Augmentation project puts the right infrastructure in place and is vital for the ongoing prosperity of the people and businesses in Walcha.”

Funding for this project is being delivered through the NSW Government $110 million Regional Water and Wastewater Backlog Program.

Mr Anderson also welcomed the NSW Government $1 billion Safe and Secure Water Program announced in the 2017-18 State Budget.

“The Safe and Secure Water Program has been set up to ensure regional NSW communities have access to high-quality, reliable and affordable water into the future,” Mr Anderson said.

“The Liverpool Plains District Water Quality project, which includes the Werris Creek Water Treatment Plant, has been shortlisted to receive funding under this new program, and I will continue to work closely with Council and the Member for Upper Hunter throughout the assessment.”

Minister for Regional Water Niall Blair said the Safe and Secure Water Program is part of the NSW Government’s dedicated Restart NSW infrastructure fund designed to ensure regional NSW has the right infrastructure in place for the future.

“The Safe and Secure Water Program will be delivered in phases, with program guidelines and the first expressions of interest scheduled to be called this July,” Mr Blair said.

“The NSW Government will draw on an innovative new catchment-wide framework to guide the prioritisation of projects and I encourage participants to think strategically about the projects that benefit regional NSW communities, businesses and industry the most.”
