Parents and carers are being offered a free child car seat safety check in Tamworth on Thursday 31 May.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said Roads and Maritime Services will provide a qualified specialist to carry out the safety checks at Tamworth Regional Park, Kable Avenue between Roderick and Hill Streets in Tamworth from 1pm to 4pm.

“It is critical baby capsules and children’s car seats are fitted correctly. An unrestrained child can sustain devastating injuries in the event of a crash, or even sudden braking if a restraint is incorrectly fitted,” Mr Anderson said.

“Our children are so precious and important and just a few minutes checking could avert a lifetime of sadness.

“The qualified restraint fitter will be looking for common issues they can fix on the day including tightening straps, checking clips and replacing loose bolts.

“Research shows two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk in the event of a crash.

“Information about the national child restraint laws, the types of restraints available and advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will be available,” Mr Anderson concluded.

For a free child car seat safety check, parents and carers are advised to phone Michaela Stevens at Tamworth Regional Council on  02 6767 5701.
