ANDERSON PUSHES FOR MRI MACHINE FOR TAMWORTH HOSPITAL
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has announced that he will push for an MRI machine for the new Tamworth Hospital.
Mr Anderson said that he will be seeking meetings the Minister for Health Jillian Skinner and Hunter New England Health, to see how this important piece of diagnostic equipment can be installed in the Tamworth Hospital. It also makes sense for me to ask for Federal Government licensing to ensure Medical Benefit Schedule funding for the MRI.
“Having an MRI is the next step in delivering services closer to home. We have a fantastic new hospital in Tamworth that has the capacity to host the MRI, so it makes common sense to me to provide the equipment and start delivering the service.
“I understand that there is much work to be done before that can happen, both at a State and Federal level. The cost of the equipment will no doubt top the list as well as revisiting the Tamworth Hospital Clinical Services Plan, the issue of Medicare funded diagnostic imaging services, and the possibility of a public and private partnership.
“I am prepared to lead the charge on behalf of our communities’ right across the whole of the New England Northwest.
“The new Tamworth Hospital has space allocated to have an MRI machine and I believe that with our hospital being a major centre serving some 186,000 people, it would make sense to make use of that space.
“The MRI is a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine that scans the body using magnetic field and radio waves to take pictures inside the body. It scans soft tissue such as organs and muscles helping to detect problems such a cancer, tumours, spinal injuries and more.
“It’s important to have this diagnostic machine in a public hospital and that’s why I will do all I can to get an MRI machine in the Tamworth Hospital.
“I am focussed on building a better region and providing health services closer to home.” Mr Anderson said.
