ANDERSON PUSHES FOR AIRPORT UPGRADE
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has met with Tamworth Regional Council Mayor Col Murray to discuss the upgrade of the Tamworth Airport and the potential of attracting a new carrier.
Mr Anderson said airline carriers had been circling for some time with an eye to provide a second service from Tamworth to Sydney and while there are a number of factors that need to make it happen, a key component was making sure the airport has the facilities to match the need.
“Tamworth and the region is growing and we need to put in place the infrastructure to meet the need not cut back.
“Today I met with Mayor Col Murray who has briefed me on progress in the pursuit of a second carrier for Tamworth.
“We need to invest further in the facilities at the Terminal to be ready to facilitate the take up of the types of service Tamworth deserves.”
“Potential carriers need to know that they there will be the on ground facilities including carousels, counter space, proper screening and security for their passengers.
“That’s why it’s critical that this upgrade goes ahead. It’s like putting the cart before the horse, carriers won’t come and stay if they don’t have the facilities.
“That’s why I am working closely with Tamworth Regional Council to get this application in and start the process.
“It will send a clear message to the airline industry that we are ready to accommodate a carrier that is prepared to deliver a sustainable service with the frequency of flights that travellers require.
“The security and screening at Tamworth airport is also very important and I believe that any carrier that comes to Tamworth should accept that we need to provide that security and it becomes part of their operation. Again it’s about moving forward, not cutting corners,” Mr Anderson said.
Tamworth Regional Council Mayor Col Murray said Council receives many approaches from the travelling public about an additional and competitive service to Sydney. We have been working with the industry to get the best outcome which ensures viable, sustainable and suitable linkages for airport users.
“The current facility limitations have been identified as an impediment to the industry so Council is proposing to resolve this blockage with the assistance of the New South Wales Government,” Cr Murray said.
Mr Anderson said “I look forward to working with Council and pushing hard for the Tamworth Airport upgrade, it has my full support and backing. As the age old saying goes, build it and they will come.”
