ANDERSON: BEWARE OF TELEPHONE SCAMMERS
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson is urging the community to be careful of telephone scammers who have contacted a number of people in the Tamworth electorate in the past week.
Mr Anderson said that his office has had calls from concerned people who have been contacted by someone claiming to be from the Australian Federal Government.
“These scammers will ring and say that you are entitled to a refund from the Australian Government which could be up to $7000.
“In an effort to get the rebate the caller may ask you how you wish the refund to be paid and will ask for bank account details.
“If you are unsure, never give personal or banking details to anyone over the phone. If you feel it’s not right then report it straight away to the Department of Fair Trading or my office.
“I urge people to be wary of calls like this as offers that seem too good to be true, usually are.
“The people who run these scams are imaginative and manipulative; they know how to push the right buttons to produce the response they want,” Mr Anderson added.
“Consumers need to stay one step ahead of scammers and have a ‘trust no-one’ approach to cold callers and once scammers know people are on to them, they modify their tactics.
“Many people in our community will be the target of a scam and people need to know that the scams may not always be over the phone, you can also be scammed by mail, email and even by someone knocking at your door.
“I want people to be cautious and report scammers to the Department of Fair Trading with as many details as possible when they are approached,” Mr Anderson concluded.
