ANDERSON TABLES SECOND WALCHA
“STAND ALONE” PETITION
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has today tabled a petition of 1560 signatures in Parliament against the Armidale led proposal to merge with Walcha, Uralla and Guyra councils.
Mr Anderson said the people of Walcha continue to show they are against any proposal to merge with surrounding councils and this latest petition is yet another example of that.
“I will continue to fight for Walcha at every opportunity to retain an autonomous local council and thank the community for their resilience.
“There is community anger and frustration that has been expressed to me in relation to this proposal from Armidale and the message is clear that Walcha want to stand-alone and this request should be respected.
“The community’s battle has been a long one, there is no doubt that the Boundaries Commission has received a flood of submissions relating to the latest proposal and this petition is just one more way we can get our message across.
“I am continuing to work on behalf of the Walcha community and speak with the Minister for Local Government Paul Toole on a regular basis to tell him that Walcha should stand alone.
“As Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and for Regional Roads and Rail I will continue to work with Walcha Council to help address infrastructure needs which should also assist in supporting the council’s bid for autonomy.
“Walcha is a strong and unified community and the grass roots campaign to remain autonomous has been preached load and clear in parliament,” Mr Anderson concluded.
