ANDERSON SAYS WALCHA WILL STAND ALONE
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has today announced that Walcha Council has won the battle to stand alone following a cabinet decision this morning.
Mr Anderson said this is a win for people power following a long battle by the community to prove they are a viable autonomous council.
“The Fit for the Future process has been difficult for the council and for the Walcha community but through this process Walcha has become stronger and I believe we will now see a sustainable Walcha Council long into the future.
“I said at the beginning of this fight that we would leave no stone unturned and I thank Mayor Janelle Archdale and community activist George Spring for working with me and the community to see that through.
“There was a mountain of work that went into this fight including the public inquiry, written submissions, the petition I started, public rallies and countless discussions I’ve had directly with the Local Government Minister that has helped produce this fantastic result.
“The message has been heard loud and clear from the Walcha community that they do not want to amalgamate with any of their surrounding councils and I will continue to do what it takes to see that happen.”
Clr Archdale said “It has been through the enormous support of the community and our local members Kevin Anderson and Barnaby Joyce that Walcha has been able to prove that small councils can be viable in to the future.”
Mr Anderson has urged the Walcha community to continue making their voices heard against the Armidale led merger proposal, though he remains confident that Walcha will still remain a stand-alone council area once the result of that proposal is announced.
