ANDERSON SAYS NEW HARNESS TRACK DELAY IS UNACCEPTABLE
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has today slammed Harness Racing NSW for disregarding the immediate need for a new race track in Tamworth.
Mr Anderson said the Tamworth racing community has been messed around for nearly a decade and after countless meetings and lip service from HRNSW, still nothing has been done.
“It is unacceptable for carrots to be constantly dangled in front of the local industry, asking them to be patient, only to be told that another track elsewhere has been given the go ahead instead of Tamworth.
“With the Tamworth Showground site up for sale there is a great deal of uncertainty amongst the Tamworth harness racing community and this has the potential to financially hurt the industry and the community.
Mr Anderson said “In 2013 HRNSW purchased a property in Tamworth at the corner of the New England Highway and Burgmanns Lane for the purpose of developing a new harness racing facility.
“Since then nothing has happened. The Tamworth racing project is not on track and has stalled. Countless meetings have resulted in nothing but the club being fobbed off time and time again.
“I am calling on Harness Racing NSW to immediately look at what needs to happen to have a new track built in Tamworth with adequate facilities to grow the local industry,” Mr Anderson said.
Tamworth Harness Racing Chairman Terry Browne said it’s disappointing that progress has not been made on the new track.
“We feel there’s a need for things to be expedited and progress needs to be made. Next year will be the 50th year of harness racing in Tamworth so I think it’s safe to say we’ve done our apprenticeship and now it’s times to build a new track,” Mr Browne said.
Mr Anderson concluded “I am calling on HRNSW to bring this project forward and start the planning and construction process now. I have contacted the Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant and I will continue to apply pressure on Harness Racing NSW until a result is achieved.”
