ANDERSON PUSHES FOR MORE TRAIN SERVICES
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has used a meeting with the CEO of NSW Train Link to push for more train services in the Tamworth electorate.
Mr Anderson said “As part of the current review being undertaken of regional train services in NSW I facilitated a meeting between Sydney based NSW TrainLink CEO Rob Mason and local staff in Tamworth so he could hear and see first-hand the great work being done locally and how important rail is to our community.
“We have a number of train stations in the Tamworth electorate and they play a big role in the transport options that people can choose from when travelling.
“I also took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of the services provided and the need to increase those services including the possibility of a daily train service from Tamworth to Newcastle or Sydney.
“We are seeing good numbers using rail and it is the preferred travel option for seniors and those with mobility challenges like wheelchairs and walking frames. If we can provide an acceptable timetable and a daily service then I believe those numbers will grow.
“We have also looked at options of stabling the trains in Tamworth overnight. We have the facilities and the security to do that which could form an important part of the service package.
“I want to see rail services in the Tamworth electorate increase and it is an important priority for tourism in our region. We’ve worked hard to increase the air travel to and from Tamworth and now it’s time to see the rail travel grow as well.
“I was delighted to receive a letter from the Namoi Joint Organisation of Councils supporting increases to rail services in the area and thank them for their support of what I believe is an important step forward for our region.
“This is all about building a better region. I believe increasing rail services plays an important role in the transport network and lessens the burden for those needing an affordable travel option to Newcastle and Sydney,” Mr Anderson concluded.
