AHEAD OF SCHEDULE - UPGRADE OF PEEL ST INTERSECTION COMPLETED
The safety of thousands of motorists will be improved following the completion of the next stage of the Peel Street/Manilla Road upgrade at Tamworth.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the $3.5million upgrade which included building a roundabout at the intersection of Manilla Road and Marius Street finished ahead of schedule and is welcome news for the people of Tamworth.
“Manilla Road is one of the most heavily used roads at Tamworth and this intersection was well overdue for an upgrade.
“The new roundabout will make the journey for the thousands of motorists who use this road each day safer, including those who use the nearby shopping centre and medical clinics.
“Safety has also been bolstered for pedestrians crossing Manilla Road with the construction of refuges.
“As well as the roundabout and safety improvements, this stage of the upgrade also involved building a new road shoulder between Marius and Jewry streets for northbound traffic, improved access to Jack Woolaston Oval and new drainage and guttering.
“This allowed the project team to get the job done faster and safer, so the community and nearby businesses are thanked for their understanding and patience.
“Tamworth Regional Council built this project on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services and the finished product is testament to the strength of the partnership.
“Since 2011 there has been almost $15 million invested to ensure Manilla Road meets the needs and demands of the community, and we’re not finished yet.
“The previous stage involved duplicating the southbound lane on Manilla Road between Tribe and Jewry streets, building a left-turn slip on Tribe Street for traffic entering Manilla Road and extending the right turn lane from Manilla Road onto Tribe Street.
“Planning is well underway for Stage 3 which involves an upgrade to the Jewry Street intersection with work expected to start later this year,” Mr Anderson concluded.
The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.
